Teignmouth, Devon, back beach boats and chalets

Teignmouth back beach is a little secret that has started to get out, it’s not just the locals now who are visiting. This ‘working beach,’ is a small sandy harbour that is on the estuary, the opposite side of the main beach, hence the term back beach or river beach. You will find a clutter of small fishing boats, fishing nets and fisherman’s crates strewn across this small beach. You can clearly see Shaldon, a smaller pretty town on the opposite estuary bank as well as the port buildings in the near distance.

Teignmouth is a working port and is not just for tourists, which gives it a feel of authenticity. The beach is often used by locals who want to sit out for a couple of hours watching the boats or enjoying a coffee. The area is quite small and not suitable for ball games. If you have an hour or so and want to simply sit and relax this could be for you. Or, if you enjoy painting or drawing then there is plenty of nautical scenic interest to be found here.

Can you Swim at Teignmouth Back Beach?

Unfortunately swimming off the back beach or river beach at Teignmouth is not advised, the working nature of the area means it is not safe to swim. The ferry to Shaldon is often in operation and boats will be moving back and forth. You can however often see people paddling at the shore.

Are Dogs Allowed on Teignmouth Back Beach?

Dogs are allowed on the beach, however, it is advisable to keep them close by. The beach area is too small and cluttered with boats etc. A full list of beach areas where dogs are allowed can be found here.

What About Food on the Back Beach?

There are three food huts selling great street food on the beach. A vendor selling Thai food and two other huts where you can get hot and cold drinks as well as snacks such as wraps, paninis, skin-on fries, fish and chips, fried halloumi and chilli, burgers and perhaps unusually Thai food to take away.

Beach hut food vendors – Teignmouth back beach

All three food vendors looked excellent, we went for the town favourite The Blue Hut that comes with excellent reviews. I think we’ll try the Thai food next time as an alternative British beach experience.

Best Parking for the Back Beach Teignmouth

The lower point car park is right on the back beach. What three words location information.
